Third quarter does Broncos in versus St. Mary’s

The Olds College Broncos men's basketball team lost to the St. Mary's University Lightning 101-91 in the Local School Appreciation Night Saturday, Feb. 22 at the Ralph Klein Centre.

The Broncos jumped out to a really quick 7-2 lead before St. Mary's cut the lead to 10-8. Alec Hillman made two free throws to restore the lead to 12-8 and the teams went back and forth scoring baskets until a great John Kaweesi pass led to Landon Parrington bring fouled under the basket and St. Mary's taking a timeout with the Broncos leading 15-10. A great Bailey Walz drive to the basket made the score 18-10, followed by a fast break basket by John Kaweesi to make the score 20-10 for the Broncos. St. Mary's cut the lead to 20-15 before Bailey Walz went to the free throw line and extended the lead to 21-15. The teams exchanged baskets and free throws until St. Mary's took a 25-23 lead and then

St. Mary's had a 46-43 lead until Landon Parrington hit a three-pointer to tie the game with a minute left. St. Mary's responded with a three of their own. Landon Parrington then made a contested basket and made the foul throw to tie the game at 49-49 to end the half at 49-49.

St. Mary's jumped out to a 64-54 lead and the Broncos called a timeout. The Broncos chipped into the lead to make it 74-67, but St. Mary's went on a run to make the score 82-67 after three quarters.

Olds scored the first basket out of the fourth quarter before St. Mary's responded with an alleyoop off the back board. Muktar Mohamed made the score 84-71. The teams went back and forth until the Broncos called a timeout at 86-74 for St. Mary's. The teams exchanged baskets and Bailey Walz cut the St. Mary's lead to 88-79 with a basket and free throw. The teams continued to alternate baskets until the Broncos took a timeout at 93-81 for St. Mary's. An Alec Hillman steal and dunk brought the score to 93-83 and St. Mary's took a timeout with a 95-83 lead. Olds brought the deficit to 99-91 with a minute left in the game.

The Player of the Game for St. Mary's was Ryan Morck with a game high 26 points to go with 12 rebounds. And, the Broncos Pit Barbeque Player of the Game was Alec Hillman with 15 points, a game high 12 rebounds and a game high seven assists.

The Broncos led the game in rebounds 38-32, while St. Mary's held the edge in assists 29-22, steals 10-7and blocks 2-1. Game leaders for the Broncos were John Kaweesi with seven assists, and Landon Parrington with the lone Olds block.

The Broncos host Ambrose University Saturday, February 29 at 6:00 pm for Graduating Student-Athlete night.
