CALGARY, Alta. - The Olds College Broncos got off to a good start, but they were unable to sustain their momentum as they fell to the Ambrose University Lions in four sets in Calgary on Friday.
Haiden Hurtig (Morinville, Alta.) led the Broncos (0-5) offensively with six kills and five digs, while Thundersky Walkingbear (Thunderchild, Sask.) and Jesse Stoddart (Calgary, Alta.) added five apiece. Stoddart also added nine digs, while Davis Clarke (Sherwood Park, Alta.) and Matheus Coelho (Belo Horizonte, BRA) posted 13 digs apiece.
For Ambrose (1-5), Harrison Rosewarn enjoyed a standout match with 13 kills and 10 digs, while Adrian Strandberg contributed nine kills and six digs to lead the Lions into the win column for the first time this season.
The Broncos got off to a good start in the first set, opening up a 15-10 lead, then withstanding a brief Ambrose rally en route to taking the first set 25-19.
Olds College again jumped out to an early lead in the second, racing out to a 7-2 advantage. However, the Broncos were unable to hang on, as the Lions fought back to take the second set 25-23.
The wheels fell off for the Broncos in the third set, going down two sets to one on a 25-9 scoreline before the Lions finished off the match with a 25-20 victory in the fourth.
Hurtig earned player of the game honours for the Broncos, while Rosewarn received the distinction for Ambrose.
The Lions and Broncos will face off again tomorrow, this time at the Ralph Klein Centre at 8 p.m.
