Olds College Broncos men's volleyball team 3-0 (25-13, 25-17, 25-18) to the Ambrose University Lions in the Parent Appreciation Night Saturday, Nov. 16 at the Ralph Klein Centre. After their win over Ambrose on Friday, which the first Broncos men's volleyball win since January 23, 2016, tonight's win matched the most wins in a season since re-joining the ACAC in 2012-13. That season they had a win each semester, so this marks the first weekend sweep for the Broncos!
The teams exchanged points to start the game with neither team taking more than a one point lead until River Thomas stepped up to serve and the Broncos went on a run to take a 13-10 lead and force an Ambrose timeout. River Thomas got a service ace out of the timeout to extend the lead to 15-10. Ambrose got the serve back but Lukas Dragicevic had a thundering kill to get the Broncos as 17-11 lead. With Thundersky Walkingbear up to serve the Broncos extended their lead to 24-12 before a long serve ended his run. Ambrose returned the favour and the Broncos took the set 25-13.
Thundersky Walkingbear opened the scoring in the second set with a powerful kill. The Broncos weren't able to build a substantial lead until Lukas Dragicevic stepped up and extended their lead to 7-3. A Lukas Dragicevic kill extended the lead to 12-6 and forced an Ambrose timeout. Ambrose went on a bit of a run out of the timeout but a River Thomas kill brought the lead to 15-8. Ambrose was able to cut into the lead a bit but Lee Lappenbush was able to serve them to 23-16 before the Broncos won 25-17.
The teams exchanged points to start the third set before Ambrose took a 4-2 lead. The teams exchanged points before the Broncos took 8-5 and then 14-7 leads. Ambrose scored out of the timeout. The teams exchanged points until the Broncos took a 21-13 lead. Ambrose cut into the lead to 22-16 before the teams continued to exchange points. Broncos took Ambrose 25-18 with a kill by number Lee Lappenbush that sailed out of bounds by a touch from Ambrose. Broncos swept Ambrose 3-0.
Player of the game for Ambrose was Adrian Stranberg with a team high seven kills and the Pit Barbecue Player of the Game for the Broncos was Phillip Sutherland.
Ambrose held the advantage in digs 52-37 while Olds held the advantage in kills 29-18, aces 27-17, aces 7-1, digs 52-37 and blocks 5-4. Lukas Dragicevic had a game high eight kills and two aces, Thomas Pugsley had a game high 25 assists, Thundersky Walkingbear had a game high two aces, Jesse Stoddart had a team high 16 digs and Haiden Hurtig had a game high two blocks for Olds.
The Broncos host Medicine Hat College Friday, Nov. 22 and Saturday, Nov. 23 for the Olds Community Night. Game time is 8:00 pm and 3:00 pm respectively.
