On January 4th at the Olds Sportsplex, in the team's first game back since the holiday break, the Grant MacEwan Griffins (9-1-3) took down the Olds College Broncos (4-10-1) by the score of 3-0.
Jamie Erickson, Sydney Thomlinson, and Chantal Ricker scored the goals for the Griffins. Thomlinson also added an assist to pick up player of the game honours. The Broncos player of the game was Hanna Matchett.
Erickson opened the scoring just two minutes into the first frame. Jaydlin Spooner would make an initial save on a shot from the slot, but Erickson would let the rebound go through a screen that would beat Spooner high on her glove side.
With four minutes remaining in the period Amanda Murray received a pass and broke up the middle on a breakaway. Murray attempted to go five hole but Spooner made a great adjustment to get the pad in the way to keep the deficit at one going into the second frame.
The Griffins would extend their lead early in the second period. Spooner would misplay a casually flipped puck off the stick of Thomlinson, which beat the keeper over the glove side. The rare error from the first year net minder gave the visitors a 2-0 lead.
MacEwan would strike again with seven minutes remaining in the frame. On the powerplay, Chanal Ricker accepted a pass in front of the net and again beat Spooner on the glove side, this time bar-down, to give her team a 3-0 lead.
The Griffins were able to play solid defensive hockey in the third frame, not allowing any good Broncos chances, as MacEwan would end up taking the game by a 3-0 mark.
Sandy Heim made 14 saves in the shutout while Spooner, pestered with shots, made 30 saves on 33 attempts.
The two teams will face-off once again tomorrow evening in Edmonton, with puck drop slated for 7 P.M.
