Queens drop Broncos in Friday night affair

On Friday evening at the Olds Sportsplex the Olds College Broncos (6-13-1) were unable to extend their winning streak to three, as the Red Deer College Queens (11-5-3) picked up a 3-1 win.

The Broncos controlled the first five minutes of the game, getting three straight powerplay minutes, including 30 seconds of five on three time. While the home team had multiple chances, the Queens would kill off the penalties and take control of the period.

Thankfully for the Broncos, solid defensive play and a perfect period from Jaydlin Spooner kept them in the game, and sent the teams into the second tied 0-0.

The Broncos opened the scoring five minutes in to the second period on the power play. After a textbook zone entry, Holt let a slap shot go from the top of the circled that was tipped in front of the net by Hanna Matchett. With a screen in front, Ariana "don't call me Grande" Kresic likely didn't even get eyes on the puck as it sailed over her glove to give the Broncos a 1-0 lead.

The Queens would quickly answer. With speed Neisha Germann rushed into the Broncos zone and made her way towards the net. Drawing both defenders towards her, as well as Spooner, Germann made a lifty pass to an open Emily Lougheed in front who buried it to knot the game at one.

On a powerplay the Queens would score again just minutes later. On a two-on-two, Dana Hauuck made an ill-advised play on the puck carrier, sending the Queens in on a two-on-one. The captain Julia Murrell would accept a pass at the side of the net and put it past Spooner to extend the Queens lead to three going into the third.

Early in the third Murrell would strike again. Denver Gray made a poor decision in her own end, making a tape to tape pass to Murrell who made a sweet move around Spooner to score.

The Queens would hold off the Broncos the rest of the way, taking the two goal win to avenge their pervious evening's loss.
