Broncos drop final game of regular season; onto playoffs

On Thursday evening at the Olds Sportsplex the MacEwan Griffins spoiled the Olds College Broncos final game of the regular season, taking the contest 6-2.

The Griffins pestered the Broncos offensively all night long, managing 45 shots towards Catalina Hartland while the Broncos managed just 11 at the other end of the ice.

Nikki Reimer, Raven Beazer, Carley Jewell and Shyla Jans all managed multi-point games for the visitors while Jordan Pettman scored both goals for the Broncos.

Morgan Casson got the Griffins on the board early, potting a shot from in tight on the powerplay just two minutes into the game. Carley Jewell scored eight minutes later for MacEwan after a nice move from the blue-line.

Pettman looked to spark the Broncos, though. On the powerplay Taeya Nicol fired a wrist shot towards the net from the blue line and, through a screen, Pettman managed a stick on the puck to deflect it past Sandy Heim.

The score remained the same until late in the second period when Raven Beazer accepted a pass from Shyla Jans behind the Broncos net and walked right out in front to put the puck past Hartland.

The second place Griffins put the game away quickly in the third, as Beazer scored her second seven minutes in, and Chantal Ricker, the player of the game for the Griffins on the night, scored just 24 seconds later.

After all was said and done the Griffins skated to the locker room with a 6-2 win.

The Broncos will have to wait just over a week as they prepare for their first ever ACAC playoff run, while MacEwan could claim first place in the ACAC with two wins over SAIT plus help from NAIT the next two evenings.
