OLDS, Alta. - The Olds College Broncos jumped ahead early, then stayed the course en route to a 4-1 victory over the SAIT Trojans at the Town of Olds Sports Complex on Thursday.
Shauna Johnson (Valleyview, Alta.) and Fiona Milligan (Ottawa, Ont.) scored their first ACAC goals in the victory for the Broncos (2-2-1), while Bree Edwards and Mairyn Tucker also scored for Olds College.
Taeya Nicol (Gilbert Plains, Man.) added three assists to earn The Pit Player of the Game honours for the Broncos.
Lexi Bruce (Edmonton, Alta.) earned her first ACAC victory, making 21 saves for the victory.
Shealee Dolan had the only marker for the Trojans (0-5-0), while Elisha Oswald made 18 saves.
The Broncos opened the scoring midway through the first, as Johnson found herself with a clear path to the net after stepping out of the penalty box during a SAIT line change. Taking a pass from Abby Webster (Hay River, N.W.T.), she broke in alone and beat Oswald five-hole to put Olds College up one.
Olds College extended its lead late in the first, taking advantage of a double-minor as Edwards redirected a Nicol shot, going in after bouncing around Oswald's pads to put the Broncos up two after 20 minutes.
SAIT cut the deficit in half on the powerplay early in the second, as Dolan found a loose puck in a scramble in front of Bruce and banged it home.
However, the Broncos would restore their two-goal lead midway through the frame, as a point shot from Milligan found its way through traffic and past Oswald to put Olds College up 3-1 going into the third.
The Trojans ratcheted up the pressure in the third, creating havoc in front of the Olds College net. However, Bruce and the Broncos withstood the surge, eventually icing the game on Tucker's empty-net goal.
The Broncos and Trojans will complete the back end of the home-and-home in Calgary on Friday at 7 p.m.
