The Olds College Broncos women's hockey team lost 4-3 in a devastating battle with the SAIT Trojans in the "Olds College Parent Appreciation" game on Thursday, November 7, 2019 at the Olds Sportsplex.
The Broncos started the first period strong with two goals. The first goal was scored at 11:56 by Kali Cummings and assisted by Nerissa Cardinal. The only penalty in period went to Olds Broncos' Marilyn Tucker for interference at 16:27. This put SAIT into a powerplay, but Olds was given the opportunity and took it for another goal. Jesse Jack skated hard and fast to score a shorthanded goal assisted by Kali Cummings at 18:22. Broncos ended the period ahead 2-0 over SAIT.
Shots after the first 20 minutes of play had SAIT leading with six and five for the Olds College Broncos.
Second period began with a beautiful goal for the Broncos scored by Fiona Milligan, with assists by Shauna Johnson and Sarah Jarvis at 3:11. SAIT entered a powerplay at 6:31 with Fiona Milligan heading to the box on a body checking penalty. Kali Cummings from Olds was also sent to the penalty box for body checking at 8:24. Using this powerplay opportunity SAIT scored their first goal of the night at 8:48 by Brittany MacDonald assisted by Wheeldon. Shortly after, at 11:50, SAIT scored their second goal of the night by Brynn Hill from McLeod and McCallum. Olds Broncos entered a power play at 11:35, sending SAIT's Karmen Mooney to the penalty box on a hooking call. A big save by the Trojan's goalie during this powerplay with another penalty for the Broncos, this time Kassy Gaudette for cross checking at 18:32. The period ended with Guadette in the penalty box and a score of 3-2 for the Olds College Broncos.
Broncos led in shots on net 12-7 in the second period for total shots of 17 for Broncos and 13 for SAIT.
The Broncos earned a powerplay early in the third period as SAIT's Kelsey Patterson was called for body contact at 1:24. SAIT tied up the score at 7:09 with the goal scored by Brynn Ferguson with assists from Patterson and Wheeldon. Almost back-to-back penalties saw SAIT's Nachtegaele called for roughing at 8:48 and Olds College Broncos having too many players on the ice at 9:48, which was served by Bree Edwards. At 16:20 SAIT's Taylor Harrison headed to the penalty box on a slashing call. The Broncos took a time out to start the powerplay. Trojan's goalie Kaylin Schellenburg had her work cut out for her in these two minutes with four shots on net and lots of action in front of her net. Broncos goalie Lexi Bruce made a nice deflection as the SAIT player returned to the ice. Timeout was called by SAIT at 19:09, but the period ended in a deadlock of 3-3 and head into overtime.
Total shots at the end of the third period are 25-23 for Broncos.
SAIT and Olds College Broncos entered the first overtime period with five minutes on the clock. The overtime goal was scored by SAIT's Kelsey Patterson assisted by Aislynn Nachtegaele at 3:03 ending the game with a score of 4-3 for the SAIT Trojans. Total shots on net in overtime were even for both teams at 2-2.
Player of the Game for the SAIT Trojans was Aislynn Nachtegaele and the Pit Barbecue Player of the Game for the Olds College Broncos was Jesse Jack, who had a shorthanded goal.
This matchup saw the Olds College Broncos skating fast and hard to control the first period with two goals. Using their momentum Broncos start the second period off with a beautiful goal by Fional Milligan. It was later in the second period we saw the Broncos let off the gas pedal allowing the SAIT Trojans to score twice. Going into the third period Broncos led 3-2 over SAIT, who scored the goal to tie up the game at 7:09. Headed into overtime, SAIT scored the game winning goal at 3:03 of the five minute period.
Broncos led total shots for the game 27-25 with Trojans goalie Kaylin Schellenburg making 24 saves and Broncos Lexi Bruce making 21 big saves.
