The Olds College Broncos women's hockey team lost 4-1 against the Red Deer College Queens in the "Staff and Faculty Appreciation" game on Thursday, November 14, 2019 at the Olds Sportsplex.
The first period started with penalties for RDC's Sydnee Decorby for holding at 2:16 and Ashley Sutherland for hooking at 6:16. Olds College Bronco Kali Cummings skated to the box at 8:06 on a body checking call giving RDC the powerplay. Red Deer College took advantage of this opportunity to score their first goal on the powerplay at 8:42 by Tyra Anderson with assists from Germann and Wallan. The second RDC goal was scored by Neisha Germann at 12:01 with assists from Cameryn Wallen and Kristen Baumgardt. The last penalty for the first period went to RDC's Kristen Baumgardt for hooking at 17:37.
At the end of the first twenty minutes the score has RDC up 2-0 with shots on net 6-5 for the Broncos.
The second period started with a penalty for the Broncos given to Kassy Gaudette for kneeing at 8:01. RDC works the puck out of their zone with a great shot by Mary Hirsch and an equally as great save by goaltender Victoria Eilers. Offside called on RDC with a faceoff outside Broncos blue line at 19:00.
A relatively quiet periods saw Olds lead the shooting 15-14 and the score stayed 2-0 for RDC.
Broncos enter the third period ready to go and the opening faceoff is won by Olds. Broncos early third period goal was scored by number 7, Karli Frederick and assisted by Maddy Black and Sarah Jarvis at 1:16. RDC's third goal was scored by Mary Hirsch with assists by Lajeunesse and Fournier at 3:18. Scores became 3-1 in favour of Red Deer College . Penalties at 10:09 were given to RDC's Mary Hirsch for hit to the head and Broncos Sarah Jarvis for roughing and Brynne Dorksen for hit to the head. Final goal of the game was scored by the Queens Neisha Germann assisted by Wallan and Decorby, at 15:26. The battle continues as both teams gained more penalty minutes as the third period continued. RDC penalty to Avery Lajeunesse and Carissa Hogan with double major for hit to the head. Olds penalties to Shauna Johnson and Fiona Milligan both double majors to hit to the head at 16:04. Queens penalty to Jessi-Lynn Sumaling for cross checking at 19:29.
Shots in the third period were 8-7 for Red Deer College and total shots in tonight's matchup were 23-21 for the Broncos.
Player of the Game for the RDC Queen's was Neisha Germann and the Pit Barbecue Player of the Game for the Olds College Broncos was Sarah Jarvis. Both players had a phenomenal game.
Broncos battled hard tonight but came up short losing to the Red Deer College Queens 4-1. It was an exciting night at the Olds Sportsplex as we saw an active first period, a quiet second period and a thrilling third. Leaving hockey fans on the edge of their seats. Broncos led shots on net in the first and second periods and RDC taking the advantage in the third. Overall, the Broncos came out on top with 23-21 shots on net. Both RDC's goaltender Madison Fox and Broncos Victoria Eilers played really well in net with some great saves throughout the game.
