CALGARY (September 9) - The SAIT Trojans picked up their first win of the 2017 Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) season on Saturday afternoon, knocking off the Olds College Broncos by a 2-0 margin at Cohos Commons Field.
Emily Fedoriak scored the deciding goal early in the second half while goalkeeper Amy Offredi cruised along, picking up her first shutout of the season.
Rookie Autumn Schneider was noticeably the best player on the pitch in the contest. Despite not scoring in the game, the midfielder facilitated the ball effectively, creating a few good scoring chances for the home squad.
While the Broncos spent most of the first half in their own end, the team played a defensively sound game inside the box, keeping scoring chances to the outside. Despite only registering a single shot in the half, Olds College made their way back into the locker room unscathed at halftime.
SAIT kept their foot on the gas in the second half. Just minutes in, Schneider deflected a teammate's pass just over the net, keeping the game scoreless.
The Broncos couldn't hold off the Trojans tenacious offense forever. SAIT was finally able to put one up on the board 15 minutes into the half when Fedoriak found herself in front of the net alone, easily kicking the ball into the far side to open the scoring.
SAIT controlled the pace of play for the rest of the half, barely allowing the Broncos to move the ball up field. With five minutes remaining in the contest, the Trojans were able to take advantage of a mad scramble in front of the Broncos goal as Taylor Zimmer scored her first of the year to ice the contest.
Jasmine Flett from the Broncos and Autumn Schneider from the Trojans were given player of the game honours following play.
The Trojans will travel to Lakeland College next weekend to take on the Rustlers while the Broncos will look to pick up their first win of the season in Red Deer against the rival Queens. Both games are slated for 12 P.M. starts.
