Broncos College women’s soccer announces international recruiting class

The Olds College Broncos women's soccer coaching staff has been busy over the winter months with recruitment as the program has seen key players graduate from Olds College, including the Flett sisters (Jasmine, Jamie and Jessie) who will now be transitioning to compete in U SPORTS. The coaching staff have signed nine new recruits for this upcoming season to join six returning players and are still in the process of adding a few more signing to the roster in upcoming months.

"I am really excited for this year's incoming recruits," said Olds Broncos Soccer Head Coach Macky Singh. "We have added a lot of speed to the team in all positions and plenty of goal scoring options. As we look to qualify for the ACAC Women's Soccer Conference Championships for the third straight year, the addition of these nine recruits will give significant depth to the program which we lacked in the past two seasons. With two European players with a lot of experience along with a blend of seven top quality Albertans in the mix, I am really looking forward to the start of training camp in mid-August."

In this, the first of three articles, we will introduce you to the two recruits from across the Atlantic Ocean, who will bring a wealth of experience with them this fall.

Here's what you need to know about these recruits:

Katharina Oeltermann: Defender, 5' 10"

Hometown: Pattensen, Hanover, Germany

2017/18 club: TSV Limmer

Academic Program: Sport Management

Why did you choose Olds College: "When I first got in contact with Olds College, I was positively impressed. The city and its surroundings are very homelike and gave me the feeling that this is the right college for me. Furthermore, I got captured by the beautiful campus and that the soccer team plays Futsal during the winter season."

Head Coach Macky Singh's analysis: "A very strong and solid centreback and will be a key player in the defensive line. Playing in the competitive German Women's Regional League North (Frauen Regionalliga Nord) for TSV Limmer, I will be expecting Katharina to use experience to lead and organize the backline defensively, but also contribute in the attacking phase as well in particular attacking corners and free kicks."

Paige Whitehead: Outside Midfield, 5' 4"

Hometown: Liverpool, United Kingdom

High School: Broughton Hall High School

2017/18 club: Mossley Hill Ladies

Academic Program: Sports Management

Why did you choose Olds College: "It felt like a perfect fit, having just spoken to a few people I already know it was the right decision! I can't wait to get started."

Head Coach Macky Singh's analysis: "Playing in the FA Women's Premier League North Division 1 in England, Paige will add speed to the Broncos attacking line. She can play either as a winger, fullback or a wide midfielder, hence her versatility will be a great asset and also has an eye to score goals as well."
