Broncos College women’s soccer brings local talent to recruiting class

The Olds College Broncos women's soccer coaching staff has been busy over the winter months with recruitment as the program has seen key players graduate from Olds College, including the Flett sisters (Jasmine, Jamie and Jessie) who will now be transitioning to compete in U SPORTS. The coaching staff have signed nine new recruits for this upcoming season to join six returning players and are still in the process of adding a few more signing to the roster in upcoming months.

"I am really excited for this year's incoming recruits," said Olds Broncos Soccer Head Coach Macky Singh. "We have added a lot of speed to the team in all positions and plenty of goal scoring options. As we look to qualify for the ACAC Women's Soccer Conference Championships for the third straight year, the addition of these nine recruits will give significant depth to the program which we lacked in the past two seasons. With two European players with a lot of experience along with a blend of seven top quality Albertans in the mix, I am really looking forward to the start of training camp in mid-August."

In part two of three introduction to the recruiting class we introduce you to local Olds High School talent and three Calgary recruits.

Here's what you need to know about these recruits:

Humera Mirza: Striker and midfield, 5' 6"

Hometown: Lloydminster

High School: Olds High School

2017/18 Club: Olds Minor Soccer

Academic Program: Business Management

Why did you choose Olds College: "Growing up I watched the Broncos compete and I hope to inspire a new generation of young athletes, much like I was."

Head Coach Macky Singh's analysis: "Humera will add a local flavour to the Broncos program. A physically strong player, Humera will add depth in the midfield."

Katherine Campbell: Midfield/wing, 5' 8"

Hometown: Calgary

High school: Bowness High School

2017/18 Club: Blizzard Soccer

Academic Program: Land and Water Resource

Why did you choose Olds College: "I chose Olds College because it has the Land and Water program I wanted to go into, as well as a great way to learn to live on my own while still living close to the city!"

Head Coach Macky Singh's analysis: "At 5'8, Kate will partner-up with Katharina who is 5'10, as the centreback pairing, possibly making them one of the tallest centreback pairings in the division. Kate can also operate in the midfield as well if required and very comfortable on the ball and a strong physical defensive player."

Kathleen Andres: Midfield/goalkeeper, 5' 3"

Hometown: Calgary

High school: Robert Thirsk High School

2017/18 Club: Blizzard Soccer and Foothills Soccer clubs

Academic Program: Land and Water Resource

Why did you choose olds college: "Olds has a beautiful campus and specialized programs that fit my personality and future goals. It's not too far from home and small enough that I feel like I can get more help in my studies."

Head Coach Macky Singh's analysis: A very quick attacking player and will further strengthen the forward and midfield line. Her ability to create scoring opportunities either centrally or out wide, will give the Broncos women a lot more attacking options."

Felicia Rodney: Striker/wing; 5' 5"

Hometown: Calgary

High School: St. Francis

2017/18 Club: Blizzard Soccer

Academic Program: Sports Management

Why did you choose Olds College: "I decided to attend Olds to continue my love for the game of soccer, also because the Program that I have decided to choose is available at Olds and I believe it will be best for me in the future. Also, Olds has small classroom sizes and great staff that will help me achieve my goals."

Head Coach Macky Singh's analysis: "Currently playing in the Alberta Women's Major Soccer League for the Calgary Blizzards, Felicia will be leading the frontline as a forward. With her speed, I anticipate that Felicia will be a huge treat to the oppositions backline as she will be our main goal scorer."
