Broncos lose tough battle to MacEwan
Holt shines, but Broncos fall 4-2
OLDS- On November 9 the Grant MacEwan Griffins took down the Olds College Broncos at the Olds Sportsplex.
Pestering Spooner with shots, Grant MacEwan opened the scoring five minutes into the first period. The first year ACAC back-stopper did a good job making big stops on in tight chances until a rebound found an uncovered forward just outside the crease who easily buried the first of the game.
Later in the period the Griffins played keep away with the Broncos in their zone for two minutes before a heartbreaking goal got past Spooner. A shot from Tessa Mitchell from the point missed the net and ricocheted back into the crease where it deflected off the back skate of Spooner and into her own net to extent the deficit to two, where it would remain going into the locker room.
The Broncos came out stronger in the second period, not allowing as much Griffins pressure while making a few chances happen themselves. However, nobody was able to find the net in the second frame and the Griffins would go into the third up 2-0.
Early in the third the Griffins took some life out of the building. On a two on one the Griffins were able to score to bring their lead to three.
The Broncos weren't going away quietly though. With 12 minutes remaining, Cassidy Holt broke in with a teammate on a two on one. From the slot, Holt elected to rip a clapper over the right shoulder of Sandy Heim to give the Broncos life.
Late in the game, with Spooner's net vacant, Emily Hill blasted a slap shot past Heim through a Holt screen to get the Broncos within one.
However, that was as close as the Broncos would come, giving up an empty net goal on the following sequence to lose 4-2.
